We will get through this!!! What “this” is, that is your
decision. May it be the economic crunch, the stock
market, your business, or maybe something in your
life? When was the last time you looked back at your
business plan or life’s plan of action? As everything
around us has changed, we need to change with the
times. Twenty years ago, email did not exist. How
many people work from their laptops or have a Blackberry
or equivalent now? Think outside of the box.
Sandy Stein and I went on a little trip to Washington,
DC, Des Moines, IA and to Chicago, IL. We looked at
communities and our Nation. For the most part, the
communities and society are on the same boat as we
are. Maybe they are inside the same “box” as we are.
One farmer I spoke with said we are in a transition period.
Think positive. We are getting through this year
and looking forward to the next one. He does not want
to look back as he cannot change the past. The farmer
can only affect the future. The only way he can do this
is by looking back at his experience and those around
him and deciding what he thinks is best.
The farmer never said, “What might have been…” or,
“What if…” We will never know the answer to that.
There are so many scenarios it would drive us insane. I
would prefer putting my energy into the future. We can
make a difference with the decisions we make today. If
we educate ourselves and plan, it will happen. We
have the answers at our fingertips, we just need to go
out and find them. Why do we have to limit ourselves
to just the box?
Let’s change gears and talk Social Studies. I had my
nine year old son D’Angelo ask me a simple question.
“What is a democracy?” I stopped and thought for a
moment and gave him the simplest answer. It is a form
of government created by the people and for the people.
We choose representatives to hopefully voice our
opinions within the government. Some people may not
be happy with the outcome of our next election, but one
thing for sure, I am happy to be an American living in
the United States of America. We just had a hiccup in
our economy and the world is feeling it. I would not
want to live anywhere else.
