FNGLA Succeeds with Landscape Maintenance Certification (4/29/2008)
Proper fertilization, mowing, pesticide application and industry safety were all principles tested during the first-ever Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Association (FNGLA) Certified Landscape Maintenance Technician (FCLMT) exam in St. Petersburg. This successful ‘beta’ exam was hosted by Pinellas Technical Education Center and will be now offered on an annual basis at different locations in Florida. (more >>)
FNGLA Receives Specialty Crop Grant Funds in
Partnership with Florida Department of Agriculture (4/15/2008)
Florida Nursery, Growers & Landscape Association (FNGLA) executive vice president Ben Bolusky today announced the establishment of a partnership program with the Florida Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services (FDACS). The program was made possible by a USDA specialty crop block grant and will be conducted over a two-year period. (more >>)
FNGLA’s 2008 Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival Partnership Continues its Focus on Kids Gardening (3/21/2008)
In FNGLA’s 10th year of participation in the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival, “Growing Future Gardeners” will remain the theme of the FNGLA’s Kid’s Gardening display. With extended dates for 2008, the festival will kick-off on March 19 and end June 1. As FNGLA has traditionally done in year’s past, we are seeking FNGLA member and FNGLA Certified volunteers to “host” the garden and initiate conversations with display guests focused on gardening and outdoor living. While both adults and children will be attracted to the garden, we are particularly interested in sparking the gardening interest with the younger generation to create--you guessed it—future gardeners! Volunteerism is Alive and Well! (3/20/2008)
What is a beautiful new facility without landscaping to add the outdoor aesthetics which not only create beauty but a very important connection with nature? On March 19, the Walt Disney World Boys & Girls Club in Pine Hills, FL was dedicated, complete with an extensive landscape, all provided through donations and volunteers from central Florida’s nursery and landscape industry. FNGLA Receives Funding Through USDA’s
Risk Management Education Partnerships (10/30/2007)
On September 27th, Acting Agriculture Secretary Chuck Conner formally announced awards agricultural risk management partnership agreements throughout the United States. FNGLA will receive a total of $30,000 from the USDA-RMA Small Session Education Partnership Agreements. Funding was awarded for the 2007 Great Southern Tree Conference, 2008 FNGLA’s Floriculture Field Days and 2008 FNATS Short Course. (more >>)
FNATS Short Course Presented a Dynamic Line-Up
of Speakers for the 2007 Program (10/30/2007)
From discovering the treasures at Discovery Cove to attending a premier educational program, a record of over 500 people attended the FNATS Short Course, October 4-6th, 2007 at the Orange County Convention Center. Held in conjunction with FNATS: The Landscape Show, FNATS Short Course offered a three-day format filled with concurrent tracks in the area of garden center management, grower management, landscape design and landscape management. An all new “Green” track was added to offer sessions on industry sustainability and water efficient landscapes. (more >>)
FNGLA Connects with Consumers at Trade Event (10/30/2007)
In a strategic move to attract more Floridians to enjoy gardening, FNGLA participated in the Southern Women’s Show in Orlando held October 11 – 14. Partnering with the consumer experts at the University of Florida, FNGLA paired the garden-interested consumers with gardening experts at the four day event. Container gardening talks were open for all interested attendees two of the four show days and the University of Florida/IFAS Publications were on hand Thursday and Friday of the show selling consumer-interest gardening books and items. FNATS: The Landscape Show Has Smiles in the Aisles (10/16/2007)
FNATS: The Landscape Show offered a positive kick start to the fall season as buyers and sellers of nursery and landscape products met for 3 days, October 4-6 at the Orange County Convention Center. Following a summer slow down in sales based on weather concerns and the drop in the real estate economy, the industry welcomed the business vitality seen at this gathering of more than 9700 industry members. FNGLA Names Six Plants as 2008 Florida Plants of the Year (9/28/2007)
Designed to promote the use of superior and proven Florida plants, FNGLA has been naming Florida Plants of the Year since 1998 and is pleased to announce six plants as the 2008 selections. Judged on criteria ranging from ease of maintenance, versatility, consumer appeal, pest and disease resistance, geographic use, ease of propagation and plant availability, a jury of 20 industry experts selected the stand-outs from this year’s list of 48 plants. Benefiting growers, garden centers and consumers alike, this year’s selections include a native groundcover, an almond-scented flowering shrub, a tropical-looking perennial, a native fan palm, a versatile foliage plant and a storm-durable native tree.
